The August bank holiday has arrived in typical fashion with promises of mixed weather to keep us all on our toes. The team here at ‘Talking Books’ are going to try and make the most of the long weekend with plans to escape away from work and technology. Though we might be off delving into new books or revisiting some of our favourite books this won’t stop us bringing you ‘Talking Books’ at the usual time this Sunday.

Join Susan at 8pm as she takes a look back at two of the best discussions from the past year.

Kicking off the show at 8pm is the celebrated and award-winning Spanish author José Ovejero. A wandering spirit José spent most of his life in different parts of the world before returning to his birthplace, Madrid. Writing across multiple forms José has brought the experiences from these travels to bear in his poetry, prose, plays, and essays.

He spoke with Susan last year about his latest novel, ‘The Invention of Love’, his influences, and what it is like to be a Spanish author. Join ‘Talking Books’ this Sunday at 8pm as Susan takes a look back at her discussion with José and their exploration of the nature of love, salvation, and how we are shaped and shape ourselves.

Rounding off the show Susan talks with Simon Critchley. Writing on numerous topics, from religion and ethics to literature and aesthetics, Simon has established himself as one of the foremost philosophers working today. His latest book, ‘Memory Theatre’, is Simon’s first excursion into what can broadly be described as fiction. This book follows the fictional Critchley as the namesake character and author bring us on an exploration of the philosophy of memory.
