There were wins on the opening Monday Night Football of the season for the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers.

Pittsburgh have gone into the season, as one of the favourites to win the AFC and comfortably overcame the Washington Redskins 38-16. Both teams reached last season's playoffs, but it was Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown who starred for the Steelers.

Roethlisberger threw for three touchdowns, including two to Brown in a dominant offensive display. Running back DeAngelo Williams also scored twice.

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins threw two interceptions on a disappointing night for the team at home.

The LA Rams played their last-regular season game on December 24th, 1994 and will have to wait another week to score their first points in a regular season game after losing 28-0 to the San Francisco 49ers.

49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick continued his protest at the American national anthem, as the Rams struggled for their first game, since relocating from St. Loius.

Blaine Gabbert threw for one touchdown, as the 49ers scored three rushing touchdowns, including two from Carlos Hyde in the shutout.
