When Saul (Bob Odenkirk) suggested that Walter White (Bryan Cranston) send Hank (Dean Norris) on ‘a trip to Belize’, he didn’t mean ‘a trip to the small, picturesque Central American country Belize’. No, there were more... violent implications to the suggestion that that.
The euphemism (perhaps destined for the same infamy as ‘sleeping with the fishes’) meant little old Belize suddenly gained more attention than it had in decades. Where some smaller nations might have been quick to get offended by the reference, the Belize Tourism Board were quick to stress they had a sense of humour about the whole thing:
Hey @deanjnorris, not so nice what @mrbobodenkirk suggested last night. We’d love to have U for an actual trip anytime. #breakingbad #belize

Now they’ve gone further, announcing an open offer for the cast members to take a free holiday in the country after the final episode of the show is aired in six weeks time.
Belize is a small country, with an estimated population of around 330,000 people. Advertised as ‘the heartland of the Maya’, it is bordered by Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. Although English is its official language, the country retains a varied cultural and ethnic background.
One of Belize’s most unusual claims to fame is being one of the birthplaces of modern chewing gum, with the late 19th and early 20th centuries seeing the country supplying much of the Chicle (from the sapodilla tree) for the US market.
