Cristiano Ronaldo may be getting some praise for his match-winning exploits for Portugal - as well as his brilliant recent form - but he cannot seem to shake off the haters (to use some social media parlance).
While Lionel Messi and even the arrogant Zlatan Ibrahimovic are liked and admired, Ronaldo seems to attract regular criticism.
But is it deserved and where has the antipathy come from?
Off The Ball spoke to Spanish football expert Graham Hunter who has met the Portuguese winger on a number of occasions.
"Why is it that people don't say that he is a more complete player? I can see that other players trust him and look to combine with him. Why is it that people don't understand that this is a guy who provides more assists and takes more responsibility for team play? I think there has been a palpable change. I think that he is an independent-minded man and articulate. My view on him in action, behind the scenes or at press conferences, is that he has wit and intelligence. Clearly he has a temper and one of these faces that gives you a thousand words."
Hunter believes the criticism is unwarranted especially as Ronaldo has dispelled many of the doubts about his abilities over the past few years.
"I think he's ill-judged. He's begun to knock down all the things that were thrown at him except for the vaudeville - the diving and looking for penalties."
