The news that head coach Rob Penney is due to leave Munster at the end of this season caught everyone a little bit by surprise.

But where does this leave the province and who is likely to fill the breach?

To discuss, the Wednesday Night rugby pack of Gerry Thornley and Keith Wood joined us on the show.

Gerry found the timing a little strange given that Munster are doing well in the Rabo and have secured a home quarter-final in the Heineken Cup.

"There obviously is some issue behind the scenes that we're not privy to, not unlike Michael Laudrup at Swansea," said Gerry.

"What I do know is that he's very unhappy with the way things have panned out and he's leaving with the job incomplete. After two years, you wonder why Munster would rip it all up and start again."

Keith said that his understanding is that Penney has a contract elsewhere that gives him a longer period of time and that leaving suits the New Zealander.

With Penney out of the picture at the end of the season, thoughts obviously turn to his successor.

Former Munster backrow Anthony 'Axel' Foley is one of the names being heavily linked with the role. Indeed Paul O'Connell let that name slip today during an Ireland press conference.

"It was very much a ringing endorsement. He's obviously a contender and the leading frontrunner. You wouldn't know whether Ronan O'Gara would enter the frame in some shape or form. Obviously Axel is there as well. Maybe there could be a role for Declan Kidney again possibly. Eddie O'Sullivan would have admirers and people who would back his candidature."

Keith is backing Axel Foley for the role.

"I think Foley is the right man for the job. I'm quite happy to say it here. I believe that his time has come and he has served a good apprenticeship. I think it's time that he gets a chance. It's time that we got our indigenous coaches a chance at the top job," said Keith.
