The transfer rumour business is a thriving one- people want to hear rumours and papers, websites and TV channels will happily provide them, though not all will provide them with as much truth behind their tales as others. So, in the height of transfer rumour season it’s a good time to take a look at who the most reliable rumour reporters are, and who could be accused of spending ink and bandwidth on the fantastic delusions of bored scribes.

The people at Football Transfer League have tallied up every transfer rumour in the British press that has been resolved one way or another since the summer of 2006 and crunched the numbers to give us a reliable look at the people in the media who can be expected to report sound transfer info.

The Guardian comes out on top with an impressive 34.2% of their transfer stories proving to be accurate, closely followed by Daily Record, with 34%. Down at the bottom is Metro with a hit rate of just 11%.

In terms of rumours reported The News of the World were a prolific bunch in their time in print, churning out 4.86 per day, almost double the second highest number –the Daily Mirror’s 2.98.
Interestingly The Guardian languish towards the bottom of the table for stories published, with just 0.26 per day.
