Who looks likely to 'win' the La Liga relegation race?

Attention in La Liga generally gets focused on the very top of the division with two of the superpowers of world football competing for supremacy while three or four others teams in direct competition for the places directly below them, thus leaving very little light being shed on what is happening on the other end of the table.

With seven games now played we can have a more detailed look at how the table is shaping up, who looks most likely to be relegated based on early perceptions and who might be ready to pull themselves away from the heap assembling at the bottom of Spain's top flight.

Deportivo la Coruna's fluctuating presence in La Liga looks set to continue as the recently promoted side have won only won of their first seven and have conceded 19 goals in total after their opening fixtures. In their defense, they had been doing relatively well in their first few games before being torn apart in an 8-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid – they have since shipped seven in three games and have not won a point.

Cordoba are also early favorites to be relegated but have shown some resistance in an effort to remove that favorites tag. They have gotten four results, albeit four draws during their last seven games but will need to start turning those one-point returns into three-point victories if they are to sneak out of the relegation places before judgement day in May of next year. It must be noted that they also shipped 8 of their 11 goals against the high-octane Valencia, Sevilla and unstoppable Real Madrid sides, which also accounts for their three losses this season.

Levante, currently being investigated and subsequently distracted by allegations of match-fixing in 2011, have only mustered a win and two draws from seven games while allowing their opponents to score 15 times. They are error prone, lack defensive ability and have all the trademarks of a team destined for the drop. They are also not a particularly young team and will only regress as the season continues.

Real Sociedad and Athletic Club de Bilbao also make up two of the bottom six but to suggest that either would be relegated might be more than a little outrageous. Since a 4-2 win against Real Madrid in their second game Real Sociedad have struggled but should right the ship before too long and steer their way out of trouble. Likewise, Athletic Club de Bilbao – one of three clubs to have never been relegated from Spain's Premier Division – have too much talent within their squad including the likes of Iker Muniain, Ander Ituraspe and newly capped Spanish international Mikel Sane Jose.

There are several teams who could and probably will nominate themselves as relegation candidates as the next few weeks occur, but at the moment it appears as though Deportivo, Levante and possibly any one of Elche, Eibar or Cordoba could join them in the Segunda Division next season.
