Waterford's hopes of having a successful Championship were dealt a massive blow at the weekend with the news that Pauric Mahony broke his leg on Saturday evening. 

He suffered the injury playing for his club Ballygunner against Ballyduff Upper in the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship.

Maher scored 0-11 in the Allianz League final against Cork the previous weekend and was set to be one of the stars of the summer.

Maher's brother Philip suffered a leg break last year also in early May and missed the championship where Waterford were knocked out by local rivals Wexford in the second round of the qualifiers.
