New York Mets pitcher Carlos Torres made use of a bit of footballing skill to set up the play of the year on Thursday night.

Philadelphia Phillies batter Jeff Francoeur drilled a hit straight back towards Torres, and set off at a sprint to make it to first base.

However, the ball was flicked off Torres' foot and went straight to first baseman Daniel Murphy, who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Torres had gone at full sprint to be in position to get the out, and Murphy threw a no-look pass hoping that someone had reacted quickly enough.

Torres had, and the ball went straight to the pitcher who narrowly made it to first, getting Francoeur out in the process. The result was an incredibly rare 1-3-1 putout (pitcher to first base to pitcher again) that already has people talking about it as the play of the year.
