Nico Rosberg's retirement was one of the sporting shocks of 2016.

The Formula 1 World Champion announced he was to step away from the sport, less than a week after winning his maiden World title in Abu Dhabi. In his retirement statement, the German stated; "I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right."

Earlier this week, Rosberg stepped into the car that won him the World title one final time. He even had time to take a selfie as he drove the W07 one final time.

Rosberg's retirement has caused a series headache for the Mercedes team. Most team lineups had been confirmed for next season, well before the 31-year-old won the title.

Former Mercedes test driver and current Manor racer Pascal Wehrlein is the favourite to take the position, alongside Lewis Hamilton, but the team are also keen on Williams driver Valtteri Bottas making the switch.

Despite Rosberg's sudden retirement, he left on his on terms at the top of the pile. Not many can say they have done that.
