New York City FC registered a 2-0 win against the Philadelphia Union in the MLS this weekend, but it was a goal on the stroke of full-time that was the standout moment of the game.
With the visitors already holding a 1-0 lead heading into the concluding moments of the game, former Barcelona star David Villa collected the ball beyond the halfway line following a sprint for possession.
And while trying to hold off a tackle,Villa decided to shoot from distance.
He launched a stunning half-volley high into the air that descended at just the right moment to evade the clutches of the Union keeper Andre Blake, who was left in a heap on the grass. The wonder goal carried a bit extra personal value for Villa, having been denied by Blake earlier in the game.
When asked why he went for the high-risk shot after the game, Villa casually explained:
"I was a little tired from running so I tried to score a goal."
Jack Harrison hit the other New York goal of the night, as the Union remain without a win since the start of 2017.
