For those who were glued to Serie A in the late '90s and early 2000s through Football Italia, Inter Milan's Alvaro Recoba was one of the star attractions.

The Uruguayan attacking midfielder spent 11 years at Inter between 1997 and 2008, scoring 72 Italian league goals.

Now 40 years old and long since playing in his native Uruguay again, for whom he won 69 caps at international level, Recoba finally announced his official retirement from the game today.

His debut for Inter all the way back in 1997 was particularly notable for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, he shared his debut with the Brazilian Ronaldo who had just signed for the club and he also scored twice in that first game which was against Brescia at the San Siro in a 2-1 win, somewhat upstaging his more illustrious team-mate with two outstanding long range goals:
