The Rio Olympics have just begun and already we have a severe casualty.

French gymnast Samir Ait Saidsuffered suffered a horrific leg break today on his vault landing. His leg snapped during his dismount and collapsed instantly as medical officials rushed to him.

The athlete lay on the canvas for several minutes while work was carried out to stabilise his injury before they transferred him out of the arena to a chorus of applause.
