The Simpsons has been on a bit of a crossover trend recently, what with the Lego and Family Guy episodes. Cynical ploy to pull in more viewers or a good-natured attempt at putting these beloved properties together? Bit of both?
Whatever the reason, the new Futurama and The Simpsons crossover is a far more obvious fit than either of the above, given both series are from Matt Groening and have shared writers, producers and even a few voice actors such as Tress McNeille. The characters have previously crossed over in comic book form, too.
The crossover is airing in the US tonight. It will likely be a bittersweet one for Futurama fans given that the show has been cancelled (yet again), and could well mark one of the final appearances for those characters.
Whether the episode matches the quality of either show's creative peak or is more in line with contemporary Simpsons quality remains to be seen, but you might get an idea through the clips that have already been released. At least the title card has a great self-deprecating gag:
