There's been a lot of people mourning the end of Breaking Bad over the last month, but one Albuquerque charity took things to another level. On Saturday the New Mexican state's Healthcare for the Homeless organisation held a full funeral for the fictional Walter White, including a full procession, dedicated gravestone and an empty coffin.
For the charity, the event proved to be a major success. They managed to raise $17,000 (over €12,400) through the 'funeral', with fans and 'mourners' paying to throw dirt onto the small coffin. They've kept online donation options open for those who want to support the charity on back of their imaginative fundraising initiative.
Despite the charitable success, questions remain whether or not the newly erected gravestone will stay where it is. Some local residents feel it's insensitive to have a fake gravestone erected in a proper cemetery, and they fear the Walter White grave will act as something of a tourist attraction to what is otherwise a quiet public graveyard. Breaking Bad tours have already driven a tourist boom in Albuquerque, with 1,000s said to visit locations like the White family house every week.
