A move to Manchester United should not thwart a World Cup winner's career but that is exactly what happened to Victor Valdes.

The former Spanish goalkeeper is to end his stint with Louis van Gaal's side and move to Belgian side Standard Liege in a bid to try and resurrect his career.

The 34-year-old joined Manchester United last January after his contract with Barcelona expired at the end of the 2014 season. The goalkeeper tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a game for Barcelona in March 2014 and no club signed the goalkeeper until he reached full fitness.

He only played twice last season and failed to make an appearance since last May, when he started a league game against Hull City in place of the injured David De Gea. Valdes was frozen out by Louis van Gaal after the manager claimed Valdes refused to play in a reserve game.

He will look to earn a full time contract with the Belgian side or even back home in Spain if he impresses for the rest of the season.
