Louis van Gaal has heaped praise on Wayne Rooney's ability in midfield after the club captain's two-goal performance against Newcastle.

Rooney featured in a central three behind the front pair of Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie, but had more shot attempts than either player.

His manager hinted that the England international's future may lie in midfield, although his traditional role up front is also another option.

"He has the lung capacity to run 90 minutes as a midfielder. That's why I use him as a midfielder. But I can use him also as a striker. But for the team at the moment, it is better he plays in midfield," said Van Gaal.
