The British actor has taken on an array of different roles over the years, from troubled Yorkshireman Heathcliff in TV movie Wuthering Heights to the notorious Charles Bronson in biopic Bronson.

Next up he is set to take on criminal twins Reggie and Ronnie Kray in a film adaptation of their lives. It is thought the feature is to be called Legend and will follow their antics including robberies, murders and arson attacks in London during the '60s.

Tom is confident he can portray both brothers and has revealed it’s only a matter of planning to get it right.

“All the plans are on the table… there’s a lot of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s, and there’s a lot of shift and geography to work out,” he explained to MailOnline.

“It would be difficult. It’s quite technical and I’m a bit of an anorak. There’s a physical transfer; we’d have to shoot one bit, go away come back and shoot it all again with another part. I’ve never dreamt of playing two people on the screen!”

The last big villain Tom played was Bane opposite Christian Bale as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Now the role of the DC Comics superhero has been passed on to Ben Affleck, who will appear in upcoming action flick Batman vs. Superman.

While some have criticised this choice, Tom can’t think of anyone better for the role.

“I think it’s awesome,” he quipped. “You got to understand, Ben Affleck is one of the finest directors we’ve got who can act and direct and be in films like The Town and Argo. It’s fantastic.”
