Tim Sherwood has dropped a hint that he would like to be considered when Aston Villa fill their managerial vacancy.

The club have sacked Roberto Di Matteo after a run of just one win in 11 matches in this season's Championship.

A 2-0 defeat to Preston North End at the weekend proved to be the final straw.

Sherwood managed the club at the end of the 2014-15 season and then the start of last season when they were ultimately relegated shortly after his successor Remi Garde's own departure in March.

Speaking to Talksport, Sherwood admitted he was "disappointed" for Di Matteo as he sympathised with the former Chelsea and West Brom manager.

But he also suggested that he would not close the door on a return to Villa Park, citing the talent in the squad.

"Would I consider it? Listen, I don’t know these new owners. I was there under a different regime. But when you go into a club when someone wants to really pick it up and take it forward, then it’s a great opportunity for any young manager. I certainly would be no different to anyone else," he said, making reference to new owner Tony Xia.
