When you watch the progress of young sports people, it is difficult to really know which ones will fulfil their true potential and become all time greats and legends.

Perhaps on September 5th 1960, it was clear to some that a legend was on the path to glory.

It happened to be the day when Cassius Clay would step into the ring at the Rome Olympics for a shot at the gold medal.

The 18-year-old had just graduated from high school and was known as “The Mayor of Olympic Village” because of the attitude that would make him famous during his peak.

Up against Zigzy Pietrzykowski of Poland in the final, Clay would claim the gold medal in the light heavyweight division.

By that October he had turned pro and would remain undefeated for 11 years (31 fights) until he lost to great rival, Joe Frazier.
