Phil Thompson reckons Liverpool are back to their flying form of last season based on yesterday’s performance against Arsenal.

The Reds drew 2-2 with Arsene Wenger’s side courtesy of a Martin Skrtel equaliser deep in stoppage time.

However, Sky Sports pundit Thompson told Ivan Yates on Breakfast that Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers will have been buoyed by the display in which Arsenal earned only 35 per cent of possession, a record low for the Gunners since Opta recorded their first statistics.

“They battered Arsenal,” said the former Liverpool captain. “The football that they played yesterday was reminiscent of last year.

“He (Rodgers) has gone to a back three which has worked very, very well.

Thompson did sound a note of caution for Reds fans, though: “We (Liverpool) haven’t got a goalscorer and we look defensively like we’re going to concede.”

He raised similar concerns for Manchester Untied supporters on the back of the Red Devils being held by 10-man Aston Villa on Saturday.

Thompson said: “They’re not good enough at the back ... Louis van Gaal must be scratching his head.”
