What would happen if John Terry or Ashley Cole had ever attempted a panenka penalty for England at a World Cup finals - and missed?

Fortunately, neither of the two most popular* Premier League players of this era ever dared try it.

But according to Twelve Yards: The Art and Psychology of the Perfect Penalty Ben Lyttleton (who is also Off The Ball's Monday night European football contributor), there is a psychological value in attempting a panenka penalty - in that it has a verified negative effect on the next opposition kicker.

Ben joined us on this week's Team 33 to talk about his most recent chat with Antonin Panenka (the former Czechoslovak player who pioneered that particular penalty technique) and also spoke to us about why Lionel Messi's penalty record has deteriorated, as well as whether big players being more likely to miss in a shootout is myth or truth.

And of course, we could not chat to Ben without taking the proverbial out of his home nation of England about their woeful penalty record.

While he shared some of the interesting technical reasons why England fail consistently, he also had suggestions for ways that the Three Lions can improve from 12 yards.
