The magic is still alive in the cup.

With top flight sides going out to teams from League One, The Championship and - in the case of Luton Town - non-league opposition, the weekend just gone was one of the most memorable is recent FA Cup history.

A look at the results pages of the sports sections this morning will have fans of cup nostalgia feeling a reassuring sense that the declarations of a demise of cup magic was somewhat premature.

Liverpool were caught up in the spate of giant killings last night as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to Oldham Athletic at a packed and noisy Boundary Park.

Anfield legend Phil Thompson spoke to Newstalk Breakfast’s Oisin Langan this morning and told Oisin why this year’s cups – both FA and Capital One – have proved there is definitely still magic in English cup competitions, even if it was black magic for Liverpool yesterday.

On a more tangible line Thompson said Liverpool were guilty of “atrocious” defending yesterday and believes Rodgers is wrong to select certain players to blame for the defeat.
