Former Man United boss Alex Ferguson would consider returning to Old Trafford in the event of Louis Van Gaal vacating the position, according to rumours circulating today.

Reports in the Sunday papers state that Ferguson would be prepared to resume working at the old stomping ground in an advisory capacity for Ryan Giggs, who many believe will be Louis Van Gaal's successor when the time comes.

Although the former player has been touted as the next possible manager, there is a sense of doubt among United fans in Giggs' ability to competently do the job. Cconsidering his wealth of knowledge from his years of serving as the United manager, Ferguson would be a popular choice to act as Giggs' adviser.

Van Gaal's position has been in question since before Christmas, and the latest reports indicate that he could lose his job if United fail to beat Liverpool today.

Initially, Jose Mourinho was believed to be in the frame for the United job after he was sacked from Chelsea, but these latest rumours put Ferguson back in the spotlight.

Club officials are believed to have concerns about the negative vibe around the team at the moment, while criticism from one of their main sponsors, Adidas, recently hasn't helped that situation either.
