According to the stats, Bayern Munich are second only to Barcelona when it comes to ball retention in Europe's big leagues.

Juventus are also a side that tend to recycle possession well but during their Champions League tie with Bayern last Tuesday, the home side was always going to dominate the ball.

Bayern Munich had 54 per cent of the ball and aided by the peerless movement of versatile Germany international Thomas Muller, the Bavarians cut their Italian opponents to ribbons time and again.

But Juventus made it easy for the recently crowned German champions by failing to remain compact.

Look at the graphic below:

Juve coach Antonio Conte has always favoured a 3-5-2 even though he used to be more pragmatic about it.

If you look at the average positions of the Bianconeri players last Tuesday, the gaps between each player were sizeable, making it easier for Bayern to play between the lines.

Andrea Pirlo had a poor game by his standards, completing just half of his passes. But he was not helped by his midield team-mates Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio who were positioned quite far away from the deep-lying playmaker.

Conte waited too long to rectify the error, bringing on Paul Pogba for left wing-back Federico Peluso and switching to a tighter 4-4-2 for the final 10 minutes.

But the manager made a glaring mistake up front. Conte had four strikers to choose from but plumped for Fabio Quagliarella and Alessandro Matri who would normally be considered as second-choice.

He realized his mistake in the second half when he replaced them with  the much more mobile and reliable pair of Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucinic but by then it was too late.

Juventus will need to attack vigorously which means Bayern should be wary considering the fact that they nearly dropped a two goal advantage at home to Arsenal in the last round.
