Sunderland have terminated Adam Johnson's contract with immediate effect.
The decision comes after the England winger pleaded guilty to grooming and sexual activity with a child.
He denies two other charges involving the same girl, and is due to go on trial tomorrow.
A product of Middlesbrough's academy, the player has been at Sunderland since 2012 after signing from Manchester City.
The 28-year-old has 12 England caps, scoring two goals.
In a statement, Sunderland said: "In light of Adam Johnson's guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.
"The club will make no further comment."
