A last minute equaliser at Old Trafford brought Sunday's Premier League line-up to a dramatic close.
A Didier Drogba header was turned into his own net by Robin van Persie eight minutes into the second half, and looked set to be the deciding goal for Chelsea.
However, a free in the fourth minute of injury time saw Manchester United scrape a draw, with van Persie slamming it home for a 1-1 final result.
The result means Chelsea now sit four points above second place Southampton, who overtook Manchester City yesterday with their 1-0 win at home to Stoke.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are out of the bottom three.
A goal from debutant Ayoze Perez saw them come away from Tottenham with a 2-1 win.
It was Emmanuel Adebayor with Tottenham's goal, with Sammy Ameobi equalising shortly after half-time before Perez scored the deciding goal in the 58th minute.
Samuel Eto'o struck twice for Everton in a 3-1 win at Burnley that lifts them to ninth in the table. Burnley's Danny Ings and Everton's Romelu Lukaku were the other goal scorers at Turf Moor.
