Steven Gerrard has admitted the he struggled to acclimatise to Major League Soccer in his first three months with the club.

The former Liverpool midfielder joined the then MLS Cup champions in the summer and failed to live up to the heights expected of him. Speaking yesterday, Gerrard admitted he had not done his research on opponents before the move.

“When I turned up here, I didn’t know there was humidity in Houston, didn’t know there was altitude in Salt Lake. I didn’t know a lot about a league that was new and a bit of a shock to me at the time", Gerrard told Sports Illustrated.

Gerrard had been training with Liverpool in the MLS off-season and he revealed that living in Los Angeles is more relaxing than his hometown. "I go about my day-to-day business pretty much unrecognized. The odd people who are soccer fans pull me aside from time to time. But at home it’s really intense and grueling."

The former England captain is expected to retire at the end of the season. He would love nothing more than to end it with his first league title in early December.
