Stephen Martin is to lead the Team Ireland at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. It will be the second time he will the team's Chef de Mission, after having the same role at Sochi 2014.

The Down native, who is also the Olympic Council of Ireland's Chief Executive, is a two-time Olympic medalist. Representing Great Britain, Martin won gold in the hockey competition at Seoul 88. Four-years earlier he won a bronze medal in Los Angeles.

"It’s a privilege to lead the Irish Team in Pyeongchang following on from Sochi 2014", Martin said. "We are working closely with Winter sport to ensure we give targeted athletes the support required to help their qualification campaigns".

Ireland have never won a medal in the Winter Olympics. The closest the country has come to one was when Clifton Wrottesley in the men's skelton at Salt Lake City in 2002.

In Sochi, Ireland had a team of five athletes, that competed in alpine and cross-country skiing, skeleton and snowboarding. 

The Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics begin on February 9th in the Korean city.
