So Stephen Ireland wants a return to the Ireland squad after a self-imposed exile of seven years.

Over the weekend, the Stoke recruit said he will consider a return to international football under the next Ireland manager.

Four years ago when he was a key player and performing well at Manchester City, it may have been a more tantalising prospect and a potential automatic choice in midfield had he returned to the Boys in Green .

The 27-year-old's status has taken something of a battering since then, falling out of favour at Aston Villa before his current attempt to rebuild his career at Stoke City.

Of course it was the case of the mysterious vanishing grannies which precipitated his exile ahead of a World Cup qualifier against Czech Republic in 2007.

A painless way back might have been possible straight after that episode but it is his comments in the intervening period which make it hard to see him accepted by Ireland fans:

"I always say 'never say never' because it's hard not to, but I don't think I'll ever go back." - May 2009
"I've left my country now, and obviously left under the wrong terms, but it's happened and, since then my life has gone really nicely. Even if they get to the World Cup, there's not a part of me that will think, 'That could have been me, I could have been there'." - November 2009

There was also the controverisal interview with French football magazine So Foot, although it must be said that Ireland claimed to be misquoted in the article:

"I feel nothing for the national team. I don’t feel at all guilty when they lose and when they win I never say ‘oh dear, I could have been there" - 2011

The question of pragmatism has certainly flown by now as Ireland - the player that is - is not an upgrade on any of the options available to the new Ireland boss, although he would provide an extra name to choose from.

But would you want Stephen Ireland to be considered by Martin O'Neill or whichever manager is appointed? Vote in our poll and let us know what you think.
