Prior to the World Cup, the biggest concern for Argentina appeared to be a defence that appeared to lack world class individuals.

But throughout Brazil 2014, Benfica's Ezequiel Garay has stood out as a rock and constant at the back.

His centre-back partner Federico Fernandez of Napoli has looked comparatively shaky beside him and it is interesting to note that he has been dropped from the starting XI since the end of the group stage.

In his place, Martin Demichelis has continued the improved form he showed for Manchester City towards the end of last season and he was especially solid against the Netherlands, helping to keep Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben shackled.

Demichelis had 8 interceptions during last night's match which was more than any other player, while he also won all three of his aerial battles against Robben (twice) and Van Persie.

Although he was successful with 60 per cent of his tackles, he did make three successful challenges along the inside-left channel that Robben has thrived in during the tournament.

In terms of his distribution, he completed 94 of his passes, the best rate of any of the five central defenders who started last night.
