Sonia O'Sullivan: Some Irish athletes are afraid of help

Sonia spoke to Ger and her fellow Cork natives about how she first got into running, treading the path to Vilanova and how the 1992 Olympics encouraged away from a possible career in accountancy.

She also touched on the hectic period between 1998 and 2000 which saw her win double gold, have a baby and gain an Olympic silver medal.

She also discussed another important issue: the potential role that athletic greats can play in advising current competitors. But she explained not every athlete is willing to take advice:

"It's easy when you're watching from afar. But I suppose it's to take the opportunity to help people out. I have done that and there are a few people we have helped out. The problem is some people are happy in their own little corner and they don't always want to listen to somebody because they think that you think that you know better. But, really, you just want to help. And some people are afraid of help. I'm willing to help anyone who wants help. But sometimes you want to help people but they don't want to take it."
