Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United need to invest in new players this summer if they're to challenge Manchester City again next season.

City's fifth Premier League title in a decade was confirmed by United's 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

Playing their second game of three inside five days, Solskjaer made ten changes to his starting XI with teenagers Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga both making their Premier League debuts.

"You know if you want to take up the challenge with them of course we need to strengthen our squad," Solskjaer told BT Sport after the game.

"Congratulations to them [City], they've had a fantastic season.

"Very pleased with my boys, because they've made it into the last 10 days of the season with a Man City team ahead of us that are lauded as the best in Europe, so we've done well.

"But we want to take the next step and it might be that we need a couple more to have a strong squad."

It's believed United's aim is to bring in three new faces for next season. Names like Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland have been touted as potential targets, but the latter appears destined to remain at Borussia Dortmund.

However, captain for the night Nemanja Matic believes Tuesday night's debutants have bright futures at the club.

Having previously featured in the Europa League, Diallo got his first taste of top flight action. But for Elanga, it was his first senior game of any hue in a United shirt.

"The young players who played tonight did an amazing job and showed that the club can count on them in the future," Matic told MUTV.

They showed that they will be very important for our club in the future. They played with personality, they showed the character, so I was very happy to see them on the pitch.

"The way they played was great, against a very good side in Leicester, it's not easy to play.

"I remember when I was young, that I always watched the older players to see how they behave, how they play, how they train. I always try to be an example for the young players. I hope that I can help them."
