Reports today say the GAA is expected to announce a deal granting SKY Sports exclusive rights to up to 14 of this year’s All-Ireland matches. Along with that the British subscription broadcaster would have shared rights to several other games.
We can expect the deal to bring in extra revenue for the association, and a new, exciting product for those fans who subscribe to SKY Sports - but can the GAA really ask us to pay to watch All-Ireland hurling and football matches? Is this a natural progression for an organisation that has previously proved itself adept at operating at the forefront of sports promotion?
Foremr President of the GAA, Nickey Brennan, spoke with Newstalk Lunchtime on Friday afternoon about the plan, and what it might mean for the future of Gaelic games.
