Sean O'Brien looks set to miss the majority of Ireland's Six Nations campaign.
Leinster have confirmed that the flanker will have surgery on a dislocated shoulder that will keep him out of action for at least 6 to 8 weeks.
But the recovery time could last up to three months which would see him miss the whole Six Nations campaign.
The 26-year-old went off injured during Leinster's win over Ulster at the weekend.
Ireland's Six Nations campaign starts against Scotland in five weeks time, with the last game of the tournament away to France on March 15th.
O'Brien will also miss Leinster's Heineken Cup ties next month against Castres and Ospreys.
