Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland side won't be headed to the World Cup in 2018, after losing their playoff against Switzerland by the narrowest of margins.

The Swiss side were the beneficiaries of a controversial penalty decision in the first leg, denying Northern Ireland their first appearance at a World Cup since 1986.

According to reports, the former Shamrock Rovers manager is on the shortlist for the vacant managerial position with the Scottish national team, after Gordon Strachan left when they too failed to make it to the tournament in Russia next summer.

According to Sky Sports, the Edinburgh-based manager has been the subject of an official approach from the Scottish association, and interim boss Malky Mackay has been told he will not be considered for the role.

The Irish Football Association is reported to be preparing an improved deal to try and keep O'Neill through to Euro 2020, while Sunderland are also believed to be interested in securing his signature.
