Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinz Rummenigge has poured cold water on speculation that the Bavarians will attempt to sign Lionel Messi.

The Argentinean played his best football under current Munich boss Pep Guardiola at Barcelona but Rummenigge thinks it is unlikely he will join his old boss.

The ex-German international says the Catalans would never sell Messi adding that it is in his best interest to stay at the Camp Nou.

There had been speculation that Bayern would attempt to trigger Messi's €250 million release clause, while honorary club president Franz Beckenbauer had claimed that the Barca star would be a "good fit" at the Allianz Arena.

But Rummenigge dampened any speculation.

"We are talking about figures here that are simply absurd - a transfer fee that is even higher than what we spent on Javi Martinez. We won't go there," he said.

"Plus I know [Barcelona President] Sandro Rosell. Barcelona would never sell Messi. He is a saint at Barcelona and they will not sell him. I also think it would be in Messi's best interest to stay at Barcelona. He fits in perfectly there.”
