Rory McIlroy had roared into the outright lead after a remarkable second round at the French Open this afternoon - only to hit water on the 18th.

The World No 4 had a bogey-free round at Le Golf National in Paris after 17 holes, which saw him make up six shots after an opening round of par on Thursday.

But he hit the water on 18th to suffer his only bogey.

He now holds a tie for the lead alongside clubhouse leaders Thongchai Jaidee and Mikko Illonenon who are on on 5-under.

Padraig Harrington is further back on 1-over after shooting a 70 today.

That is far ahead of Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell who are on 10-over and 11-over respectively and will both miss the projected cut.

The latter is a two-time winner of the event in 2013 and 2014.
