Wayne Rooney put a poor start to the season behind him by plundering a hat-trick as Manchester United swatted away the challenge of Club Brugge tonight in the Champions League play-off round second leg.

It means Louis van Gaal's side are safely into this season's group stages thanks an 7-1 aggregate win.

Leading 3-1 on aggregate after the first leg, Rooney scored a first half goal to settle any nerves in Belgium.

The England captain scored two more in the second half, while midfielder Ander Herrera added a fourth.

United could have scored a fifth but Javier Hernandez slipped when taking a late penalty, sending his effort wide. 

Meanwhile, Bayern Leverkusen overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to dump out Lazio 3-1 on aggregate tonight, while CSKA Moscow, Dundalk's conquerors BATE Borisov and Kazakh side FC Astana also qualified for tomorrow's group stage draw.
