The rain was always going to affect play at the US Open, and Day One has lived up to its forecasted billing.

Many players including leader Luke Donald will have to complete their first rounds on day 2 of the US Open in Merion.

The Englishman is currently on 4 under with five to play of his first round following delays of over 4 hours yesterday due to the bad weather.

Phil Mickelson completed his round and is 3 under, while Adam Scott is 3 under after 11.

Rory Mc ILroy is level par after 11 while Waterfords Kevin Phelan finished on 1 over following a 71.

Padraig Harrington is 3 over after a 73, while Graeme Mc Dowell is 3 over after 12, and Darren Clarke is 5 over after 12.

World Number One Tiger Woods is 2 over through 10.

Newstalk Breakfast's Oisin Langan spoke to former European Tour golfer Ronan Rafferty who cast his eye of over the standard of play in the opening round so far.

"Conditions forced the way that people had to play. There was lots of speculation because the golf course was so wet adn vulnerable. But I didn't see it that way yesterday," said Rafferty.

"If you looked at the length of those par 3s, three of them were over 240 yards. But in a way the golf course played easy because you could attack it off the tee and guys were really going it for it last night. But nobody is going super low. Everyone is finding it because if you hit it offline or into the rough at all, you've seen how clean it is."
