Cristiano Ronaldo has declared Manchester United “is in the past” as he signed on for five more years at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo signed a three year contract extension this afternoon which – while making him the best paid player in the world, on €17m per year – dashes any hopes at Old Trafford of enticing the Portuguese back to the Premier League.

Speaking to the press after the announcement Ronaldo explained he was happy to stay at the Spanish club and put paid to any discussion on his intentions regarding a return to Manchester United.

"I'm really happy here. I'll be here five more years. I just want to win trophies for this club,” Ronaldo said.

"I appreciate the fans like me a lot to be here. I'm happy, I want to give my best on the pitch.

"I will be honest with you - everyone knows I was in Manchester for six years. Manchester is in the past.

"Now my club is Real Madrid. This is my home, my family is here and I'm really happy here.

"I respect all the clubs who ask about me. But they always know that my decision, that my only goal is to be here and to play at this club until, maybe, the end of my career.

"The future nobody knows."

Ronaldo scored a goal in last night’s 2-2 La Liga draw with Villareal, while Gareth Bale was Madrid’s other scorer.
