Roger Federer's place in tennis history was further cemented today as he became the first male player to reach 300 wins in Grand Slam matches.

The Swiss star reached the last-16 of the Australian Open for the 16th year in a row. He defeated Bulgaria's Gregor Dimitrov in four sets. The match finished 6-4 3-6 6-1 6-4.

Federer's 300 Grand Slam wins have come in the space of 16 years. His most successful year was in 2006 as he won 27 matches. He claimed the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles. He was defeated in the French Open final.

The 34-year-old's longevity is shown in a statistic that shows how far ahead he is of his nearest rivals in terms of Grand Slam matches won. Jimmy Connors is second on the list with 233 wins.

Federer plays Belgian David Goffin in the Fourth Round. The two men have only played each other three times with Federer winning all three games.
