From Drogheda United thrashing Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers picking up a very late point against Derry City, the opening weekend of the 2014 Airtricity Premier Division threw up plenty of talking points.

We were joined by Derry manager Roddy Collins and Stuart Byrne for our Tuesday night League of Ireland slot and they started off by talking about the Candystripes' 1 - 1 draw at Shamrock Rovers which saw the home side score an injury time equalizer.

Roddy admitted that the televised game was like "paint drying on the wall" but emphasized the fact that avoiding defeat in the opening game of the season was paramount.

"When you go to an away ground, you don't have to entertain people," said Roddy. "The RTE cameras were there but that's not my concern. At the end of the day we went out to not concede and that was the most important thing. If we nicked the 1 - 0 it would have been a great bonus."

Stuey was impressed by Cork City's 1 - 1 draw with champion St Patrick's Athletic and believes Turner's Cross will be a very difficult place for away sides to go to during the season, but also highlighted the quality of the Pat's goal.

The lads also discussed the Louth Derby which saw Drogheda make a great start against last year's surprise package Dundalk. Stuey believes the 4 - 1 defeat is a "real kick in the teeth" for manager Stephen Kenny.

Roddy also told Joe that live TV interviews with managers on the sideline during league games are a "nuisance", "distracting", "embarrassing" but not something he or other managers can avoid.
