Robbie Keane's hopes of winning a fourth MLS Cup ended last night as his LA Galaxy side lost to Seattle Sounders 3-2 in the Western Conference Knockout Round.

The reigning MLS Cup champions were one of the the first sides to be knocked out of the play offs as an Erik Freiburg goal, just over 15 minutes from full time was enough to separate the teams.

Seattle and LA shared four goals in the opening 22 minutes. Clint Dempsey gave Seattle the lead after two minutes, but the Galaxy equalised four minutes later through Sebastian Lletget. Nelson Valdes ensured Seattle took the lead again on 12 minutes, but that goal was cancelled out ten minutes later by Gyasi Zardes.

Despite not retaining the MLS Cup, it has been a successful season for Keane. He scored 20 goals in the regular season, the first time that he has reached a tally that high since joining the California club. As in the previous three seasons, Keane's haul meant that he was the team's top goalscorer.

Keane was yesterday named in Martin O'Neill's 39 man provisional squad for the Euro 2016 play off against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
