Despite opening the tournament with two 0-0 draws, Brazil finally got their Olympic Games underway, in the way they would have originally hoped with a 4-0 win over Denmark.

Needing a win to guarantee their spot in the quarter-finals, the hosts scored two goals in either half to advance. New Manchester City signing Gabriel Jesus scored the team's second goal in Salvador.

The hosts now meet Colombia this weekend in the quarter-final. The other three games see Portugal meet Germany, Nigeria face Denmark and South Korea play Honduras.

America's men's basketball team were made sweat against Australia. The overwhelming favourites for the gold medal were losing 54-49 at half-time, before eventually winning 98-88.

Carmelo Anthony top-scored for America scoring 31 points, as he became the leading scorer for the US in the history of Olympic basketball.

Kohei Uchimura won gold in the men's individual all-around gymnastics final. The Japanese star scored 92.365 points to finish ahead of Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev. Great Britains's Max Whitlock finished in third place.

Whitlock's medal was Britain's first men's all-around gymnastics medal in 108-years.
