It's almost three months since the Paralympic Games concluded in Rio de Janeiro, yet organisers are still struggling to pay some bills from organising the events over August and September.

The Brazilian city became the first South American city to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, amid a political and social crisis in the country.

Before the Paralympic Games began, the event was downsized by Rio 2016 organisers, with some venues not used that were originally pencilled in to host Paralympic events.

According to the Associated Press, the International Paralympic Committee are still owed almost €3.5million by the Rio 2016 committee.

"Never have we faced an issue like this with an organising committee being so late paying travel grants," IPC spokesman Craig Spence admitted.

"Some of our smaller national Paralympic committees, who took out loans to pay for their travel for the Games, are now in serious danger of defaulting on their repayments".

The IPC have written to Rio mayor Eduardo Paes looking for help in getting the funds. Travel grants are a contractual obligation to hosting the event.

While Paes is hopeful of helping the IPC, Rio's mayor will be replaced by Marcelo Crivella at the start of 2017, after his spell ends.
