Play's been abandoned for the day at the French Open tennis without a ball being struck in the scheduled men's and women's quarter-finals.

No play was possible before the heavens opened in Paris, and with no sign of the rain stopping today's matches have been deferred.

Men's top seed Novak Djokovic was slated to face Alexander Zverev in the quarter finals, while defending champion Simona Halep was due to go up against Amanda Anisimova on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Organisers had pushed back the intended start time from 2pm every half an hour until 4.30pm, when a decision was made by organisers to write off the day's play.

Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam venue without a roof on at least one court and it's the second time three years that play has been lost for an entire day at the French Open.

Today's other matches were set to be fourth-seed Dominic Thiem against 10th-seed Karen Khachanov and the women's last eight clash between Ashleigh Barty and Marion Keys on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

They've been carried over until tomorrow, with all semi finals to be played on Friday. Should Halep make the final, she'll have played on three consecutive days.

Johanna Konta and Marketa Vondrousova will meet in the women's last-four while there's a meeting between rivals Roger Federer and 11-time French Open Rafa Nadal in the men's.

Thursday's weather forecast for Paris is for a brighter day but there's still a chance of showers in the afternoon.
