Jason Quigley has won gold at the European Under-23 Championships.
The Donegal middleweight beat German Elite champion Dennis Radovan by 17 points to 11 after out-classing his opponent in their final in Russia. Quigley won the first two rounds 5-3 to hold a four-point lead going into the third and final round. Radovan desperately sought to reduce the gap at the start of the last, but Quigley was able to score on the counter to seal his second top of the podium finish in European competition.
The gold medallist at the 2009 European Youth Championships said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the win, said the newly crowned champion, who was presented with his medal today.
"When I won the bronze here I was very happy to have my second European medal, but when you get to that stage you always want to change the colour and thankfully I did."
Earlier, Hugh Myres had to settle for a silver medal after he lost his light-flyweight final by a single point.
Myres lost a 11-10 decision after three tight rounds against Armenia's Kariun Sogomonyan.
The medal wins round-off an astonishing year for the Irish amateur squad, which has won gold, silver and bronze at every Olympic, World, European and Multi-Nation tournament it has entered in 2012.
