Merseyside Police are investigating what they're calling a "threatening" banner which was hung near the home of Rafa Benitez.

"We know where you live - don't sign" was written on a white sheet - which is likely a reference to the former Liverpool manager's seemingly imminent appointment as boss of rivals Everton.

Police say it was left outside the wrong house and that it's concerned residents.

Benitez has owned a property on the Wirral since his time in charge at Anfield.

The 61-year old is the frontrunner to succeed Carlo Ancelotti this summer at Goodison Park, but a large number of Everton fans are unhappy with the potential appointment.

Many hold residual anger at a throwaway comment from Benitez during a post-match interview in 2007. The Spaniard grouped Everton with "small clubs" following a 0-0 Merseyside derby draw.

Following Ancelotti's departure, a number of candidates have been linked with the Goodison hot seat.

Despite names line Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Lucien Favre being spoken about, Benitez has emerged as the frontrunner.

Regarding the threatening banner outside his home, Detective Inspector Darren Taylor of Merseyside Police said: "This message has understandably caused some distress and worry for residents in the area.

"Due to the football language used, we suspect that it was aimed at Rafa Benitez - but whoever placed the message left it outside the wrong house.

"If anyone has information about who produced the banner or helped to put it up, please let us know as soon as possible."
