Michel Platini has once again called for an end to the “triple punishment” of the automatic red card rule in football. Platini supported Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger in opposing the multiple punishments of a red card, penalty and suspension handed out to a player who denied a clear goal scoring chance in the penalty area.

The UEFA President defended the decision of the referee to dismiss Arsenal keeper Wojiech Szcznesny during Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, but insisted the rule needs change. Szcznesny fouled Bayern’s Arjen Robben as the Dutchman went through on goal, earning a red card and giving away a penalty in the process, while also now facing a suspension.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, ahead of today's Euro 2016 qualifying group stage draw, Platini said: "For 15 years we have been trying to change this rule. All the technical committees of UEFA and FIFA are against this but when it has gone to the International Board it doesn't change."

"Arsene Wenger said the referee killed the game but the referee had no choice - he has to respect this stupid rule."

"I am against it, and I want it to be changed," said Platini.

Platini has previously advocated the introduction of a sin bin style punishment, akin to the system used in rugby. Platini spoke of this possible solution late last year, saying: "I would change the system of cautions. I would do it like in rugby, where the perpetrator would be punished by being off the pitch for 10 or 15 minutes of the game. That means the team they are facing would benefit in the same match."
